About the Belfair Washington and North Mason Community:
"Fall brings a blazing palette of color and an opportunity to view the endangered run of summer chum salmon as they enter the Union River to spawn."
With its network of high-speed internet access, North Mason is far ahead of most rural counties and continuing to progress rapidly. The fiber optics backbone is countywide, owned and maintained by Public Utility District #3. Retailers provide on-site connections to customers, both commercial and residential. Additionally, broadband access through cable service is also available in most communities.
The town of Belfair is buffered by the grassy fields of the Theler Wetlands Trails and Nature Preserve, located on State Route 3 across the street from Belfair Elementary School and just five minutes from The Villas on Clifton Ridge. Residents and visitors walk the trails year-round and enjoy the changing seasons of this beautiful jewel in Belfair's backyard. The winter months will amaze you with the highest tides of the year as Hood Canal's salt waters lap at the trail's edge. Springtime brings new growth of many native plants along the trail and in the gardens surrounding the
Hood Canal Watershed Project Center. Summer provides many opportunities for viewing migratory birds and resident wildlife, while fall brings a blazing
palette of color and an opportunity to view the endangered run of summer Chum salmon as they enter the Union River to spawn. No matter how many times you walk this trail, you'll always see something new, something different and something memorable.
Belfair serves as North Mason's commercial core, with three shopping centers, two major grocery stores, several financial institutions, medical, chiropractic and dental care and a variety of shops and restaurants. The North Mason Chamber of Commerce, located in downtown Belfair, serves as the headquarters for Mason County services, including vehicle, vessel, fishing, hunting and marriage licenses, satellite visitor information and county-wide employment opportunities.
The North Mason Timberland Library began in 1950 in Dorothy Newkirk Harper's Belfair Drug store. By 1979, the Friends of the North Mason Library had purchased land for a new library building and deeded the property to the district. The current site opened in 1998 at 23081 NE State Route 3 in Belfair and boasts a beautiful state-of-the-art 14,400 square foot facility with a vast collection of books, videotapes, DVDs, CDs, audio cassettes, newspapers and magazines for readers and library users of all ages. Computers with
access to the internet, Microsoft Office, and online reference databases are available. The library is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors and residents enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, scuba diving and water sports of all kinds on both the north and south shores of Hood Canal and Puget Sound, at any of the 200 plus freshwater lakes in the area and along the miles of rivers, streams and creeks. Local lakes with public access boat launching include Lake Devereaux, Trails End, Mason, Benson, Aldrich, Haven, Maggie, Tee, Tiger and Wooten Lakes. Many of these freshwater lakes are well-stocked seasonally with a variety of fish, including rainbow trout, cutthroat, kokanee, brook trout, bass and perch. Freshwater fishing seasons and daily limits vary. Some creeks and streams may be closed for fishery enhancement. During mid-summer and early fall, the salmon begin their seasonal migration home to spawn in several Mason County rivers. |
