The idea for North Mason’s world-class Pacific Northwest Salmon Center (PNWSC), shown here,
was first conceived 10 years ago by three members of the local Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement
Group (HCSEG) who had a dream of building a multi-purpose facility destined to impact the future of
our wild salmon.
Today, following an anonymous $50,000 donation which funded the center’s conceptual design, local citizens have embarked on an ambitious campaign to raise the additional $18 million needed to fund this non-taxpayer supported 50,000 square foot facility, slated to open in Belfair, July 2005.

Why build a salmon center in North Mason? Besides providing a tremendous boost to the already phenomenal environmental education program offered by our local NM school district, the salmon center will enhance public knowledge and appreciation for the values of wild salmon and related ecosystem health. These goals will be accomplished through research, interactive education, a museum, displays, seminars, tours, a Wild Salmon Hall of Fame, and other means.
The graphic shows the site for the new center, which will be located adjacent to the Mary E. Theler Community Center and internationally-recognized Theler Wetlands Trail System on State Route 3 in Belfair, across the highway from Belfair Elementary School.

Shown here are several key elements of the PNWSC, including the salmon spawning and interpretive channel alongside the building, the six demonstration ponds, the self-contained 250-seat community conference center, and the fish-viewing gallery, where visitors can take the glass-walled stair from the upper floor lobby down through the demonstration aquarium to the lower level where salmon behavior and spawning can be viewed above and below the waterline.

| This view shows the main floor of the three-story facility. Highlights include a central lobby with an outdoor area covered by a greenhouse type structure for shelter from the weather and viewing of the first of six outdoor pond demonstration areas. Indoors, a series of dynamic and interactive interpretive displays will be featured, accompanied by the inspirational Wild Salmon Hall of Fame, reserved for those who have demonstrated their personal passion for the preservation of salmon. The indoor lobby will offer a gift shop and concession area | ||

In the lower level of the facility, a series of work stations will house state-of-the-art technology and research labs. Visitors can look directly into the labs through the glass. It is envisioned that researchers from colleges, local, state and federal agencies, and students and teachers from North Mason and beyond will use these labs for ongoing work at the center or to showcase their research to the public. |

This last view shows the stunning PNWSC entry plaza and outdoor lobby from State Route 3. A covered walkway from the parking area to the lobby will feature demonstration gardens, artwork and sculptures, enabling visitors to begin their PNWSC experience before they ever enter the building.
